Viewing properties is probably the most fun part of the rental process,
particularly if this is your first time away from home. However it’s sometimes all too easy to get giddy with excitement and those all important questions slip your mind. Here are our top tips to make sure you get all the information you need.
1. Is this broken?
Pay attention to the condition of the property. If something is broken or not quite right, as the question.
“Can you fix this?”
“Whose responsibility is it?”
“Can it be fixed before we move in?” “Is it fixable – is it prone to break again?”
2.What is the area like at night?
Many of you may be new to the area, which is always a little disconcerting. Your agent should be familiar with the area so pick their brains on the safest route home or what’s your best local? “Is there anything we should be wary of?” “How much is a taxi from here to town?”
If you’re viewing a property that’s currently being lived in, be sure to ask whether the beds are included, the desks and the sofas? Some of what you see may not come with the property so make sure you ask so you’re not caught out on moving day!
4. Where can I put my stuff?
It’s worth thinking about storage as you want a comfortable living space. “Is there a bike rack?”
“Is there a bin area?” These questions will help when you come to move in.
5.What is the transport like?
If you know where you’re going to be studying it’s useful ask where the local bus stop is and work out what’s in walking distance.
